Large Landfill Anti-Seepage Project – 7-Layer Composite Liner System

Large Landfill Anti-Seepage Project – 7-Layer Composite Liner System

    Project Overview

A reliable landfill liner system is essential for protecting groundwater, controlling leachate migration, and ensuring long-term environmental safety.

This large landfill project features a multi-layer anti-seepage system designed to provide effective containment, drainage, and protection. The system integrates high-performance geosynthetic materials with an engineered soil foundation to support demanding landfill applications.

    Seven-Layer Liner System

The system consists of the following layers, arranged from top to bottom:

    Layer 1 – Waste Body
Municipal solid waste and other approved waste materials.

Layer 2 – Leachate Collection and Drainage Layer
A 300–500 mm gravel or crushed stone drainage layer with perforated HDPE drainage pipes to collect and discharge leachate.

    Layer 3 – 600 g/m² PET Filament Geotextile
A nonwoven filament geotextile designed to provide cushioning and protection against mechanical damage to the underlying liner system.

Layer 4 – 6 mm Composite Drainage Net
A three-dimensional geocomposite drainage layer designed to facilitate liquid flow and support efficient drainage.

    Layer 5 – 2.0 mm HDPE Geomembrane
The primary anti-seepage barrier, providing excellent impermeability and chemical resistance for landfill containment applications.

Layer 6 – GCL (Geosynthetic Clay Liner)
A sodium bentonite-based waterproofing layer that provides additional seepage control as part of the composite liner system.

Layer 7 – Compacted Soil Foundation
A prepared, levelled, and compacted subgrade providing stable support for the liner system.

    Key Project Benefits

    • Groundwater Protection: Helps prevent leachate from migrating into the surrounding soil and groundwater.

    • Reliable Containment: The 2.0 mm HDPE geomembrane serves as the primary barrier against liquid seepage.

    • Enhanced Liner Protection: The 600 g/m² filament geotextile helps protect the geomembrane from mechanical damage.

    • Efficient Drainage: The drainage layer and composite drainage net facilitate leachate collection and discharge.

    • Additional Seepage Control: The GCL provides a supplementary barrier within the composite liner system.

    • Long-Term Environmental Performance: A properly designed, installed, and maintained liner system supports safe and reliable landfill operation.

    Applications

This type of composite liner system can be considered for:

    • Municipal solid waste landfills

    • Industrial waste containment facilities

    • Mining tailings storage facilities

    • Environmental protection and waste management projects

    • Other engineered containment applications
